GWIC - The Gravitational Wave International Committee

Artist's Conception of Gravitational Waves GWIC: Gravitational Wave International Committee

2006 GWIC Meeting

-----------------

Date: Saturday, 17 June
Time: 8:30 AM - 3:30 AM (estimated)
Place: University of Maryland
Computer and Space Sciences Building
Room 2324

Directions to the campus can be found at the University of Maryland web page for visitors (http://www.astro.umd.edu/contact.html).

From the Goddard vicinity and the location of many of the symposium hotels (see map), proceed west on Greenbelt Road (MD-193). At a flashing red light, exit left across traffic on Greenbelt Road when MD-193 bears right and becomes University Blvd. After a few blocks, turn left onto Baltimore Ave./US-1 and go 0.7 miles. Turn right on Campus Drive through the obvious Main Gate of the University. Proceed 0.2 miles to the traffic circle with the large M and take the first exit, an effective right turn. [The route shown on the enclosed tiff map is not accurate in these last details.] Turn left at the second intersection, a four-way stop. Turn left into the large parking structure (shown as building #202 on the campus map in the file UMD_2005_Map.pdf), and park in any space which is part of Parking Lot B. Parking in these spaces is free on the weekend.

The Computer and Space Sciences Building (Building #224 on the Campus Map) is across the street and slightly uphill from the entrance to the parking structure that you drove in. Walk across the street and uphill (west) until you see the Astro-Turtle sculpture in an open plaza. The new wing of the building is behind Astro-Turtle; the room where GWIC is meeting is located on the second floor of the old wing. Access to both wings is through the main entrance to the new wing behind Astro-Turtle. Note - and this is a tricky bit - that you have to go through a glassed-in walkway from the second floor of the new wing and down one floor of stairs to get to the second floor of the old wing where the GWIC meeting room is located. The second-floor plans of both wings are shown here: the new wing is shown on the left side of the drawing, and the old wing is on the right.

The GWIC Meeting will be held in the large auditorium (Rm. #2324) in the old wing of the building (the large room in the middle of the left hand side of the right hand drawing on the floor plan). To reach the GWIC meeting room, the new wing of the building through the main entrance of the new wing, go straight to an inner transecting hall, turn right for elevator or stairs and ascend one floor. Proceed first to room 2400, which is the main lecture hall in the center of the building. From the hall way in front of Room 2400, go out to the windowed area on the south wall over the entrance and turn left. Continue through the glassed-in walkway to the third floor of the old wing. Turn right in the interior hallway, turn right again at the first stair well and descend one floor, exit the stairwell into the interior hallway of the second floor. Room 2324 is just across this hallway.
